Born south of New York, Mike was always an active kid during his childhood. After suffering a football injury at the age of 14, Mike discovered bodybuilding and immediately fell in love with pumping iron.

“I’ve been training since the age of 12. I initially started for football which I played into college, but had to stop due to injuries. I was hooked on training though, I continued to lift through college and into my career as a police officer where training took on a whole new meaning. I started training for not only my safety at work, but my coworkers and the people we are there to protect. So constant strength and cardiovascular training is very important.”

During his time as a personal trainer, Mike also had another passion, which was becoming a police officer. After several months or applications and trials, Michael managed to get the job in the New York City Police Department, an event that started a completely different way of life from this point onwards.

“It’s to break the negative stereotypes against cops, that they are chubby and overweight and eat doughnuts. I wanted to build a platform to inspire first responders to be in shape.”

The eight-year veteran who patrols The Bronx’s busy 52nd Precinct now has more than 165k followers, but he says his colleagues initially ribbed him for his social-media presence.

“I love being a cop, especially in NYC. And no, I wouldn’t consider myself a celebrity by any means. People very rarely recognize me on the street, but it’s gratifying when they do. It’s nice to know I motivate them to live a healthier lifestyle, and sometimes they even fill me in on what accomplishments they’ve made because I have inspired them.”

Michael Counihan diet

Michael is an advocate of eating healthily but says that everyone should have a balance in their diets, meaning occasional cheat meals are completely fine.

Meal 1: 1 scoop protein
Meal 2: 6 egg whites and 1 whole egg
Meal 3: 6 ounces chicken and 1 cup vegetables
Meal 4: 6 ounces lean steak, 8 ounces rice and 1 cup vegetables
Meal 5: 1 scoop protein and 50 grams carb powder
Meal 6: 6 ounces chicken and 1 cup vegetables

“My nutrition solely depends on my desired physique, so it will vary from time to time. For example, if I’m trying to get leaner, I will manipulate my carbs and fats, and I will keep my protein levels relatively high. Currently, I am eating an unlimited quantity of vegetables during my meals, and I’m keeping my carbs at about 25-50 grams per serving. My diet at the moment looks something like below.”

As a cop, Counihan’s never really off the job — at the gym, he once saved the life of a man who suffered a heart attack on the treadmill, giving him CPR.
